A word from the Starsky & Hutch SVS Steering Committee….

From Kandy: This is all Candy Apple’s fault. She put forth the idea of doing a Starsky & Hutch slash virtual season, and I made the mistake of volunteering. Since I’m a domain and website owner, I also volunteered to host the site. No problem. Little did I know I was going to become the webmom and co-coordinator of the season. Season Five was both highly rewarding and highly aggravating. I think my co-conspirators will vouch for that. I gained a powerful respect for the people who put television shows on the air for real, and for the other people who produce virtual seasons. This was tough work. We were committed to bringing forth a high quality “show” for our readers, and I think we succeeded, but the cost was high. You’d think I’d leave it at that, but noooo. When the suggestion came up for putting the season into a zine, I naturally volunteered to do that as well. I couldn’t see any other zine publisher handling our baby.

Now, if I’d only worked on the project throughout the hiatus instead of waiting until a few weeks before Season Six loomed near. Sorry Barb, but thank you and your assistants for all of your hard work. Barb has been a wonderful supporter and terrific editor for the show. Candy couldn’t have chosen a better person for the job. She’s an asset to the project. And thank you, Candy, for having the audacity to put forth this idea and take the bull by the horns. I don’t know what you do in RL, but the SHSVS has an excellent CEO in you. Thank you, authors. Without you there would be no zine to produce. And I can’t forget all our artists for the season. They did a wonderful job, and sometimes with less than a day’s notice. And finally, I must thank D.L. In the midst of trying to get her own story submission written for Skeeter Press’ “Merged Worlds” and layout that zine, I gave her this two-volume monster to layout. All of which needed to be produced in time for MediaWest 2002. Talk about yikes! But she handled it like a trooper. Thank you. Enjoy.

From Barb: Kandy’s right. This is all Candy’s fault, and we can place the “blame” for the fifth virtual season on her. But she’s also the person behind the scenes who kept this entire project organized. And Kandy and I have Candy to thank for our sanity at times, as well as a much-needed laugh in the midst of a crisis. She’s also the one who wrote those much dreaded words in one of her posts to us—”Next season…” But here we are, back for a sixth season. Thanks to Kandy and her web team and team of artists who do all kinds of net manipulation I know nothing about. The result has been a very professional-looking virtual season and a wonderful two-volume zine.

Sue, Val, and our team of betas helped make my job a lot easier, as we tried to present clean and well written episodes and stories for this zine. But the heart and soul of this project has to be the stories, produced by a group of very talented authors. I’ve known some of them for a while, others, I “met” for the first time while working on the season. Several of these ladies volunteered to do more than one episode under the pressure of deadlines and a very picky editor. And some have become dear friends in the process. Although this project was a little…time-consuming, it has managed to capture the interest of fans who are here for the same reason we are—to further explore the extraordinary relationship between two terrific guys.

From Candy: Okay, it’s my fault, and I take the rap for having the idea—but what an idea it turned out to be when brought to life by the incredible team of authors, artists, web folks, editors, and beta readers. A project like this is only as good as the team who produces it, and I never cease to be impressed by the talent of this group. Barb, you are an amazing Managing Editor, and Kandy’s right—there couldn’t be a better choice for the job. Your dedication to the quality of this project and your commitment to working with our authors is truly outstanding. I know you’ve often put RL on hold just to get us in shape for an airdate. Thank you for all you do. Kandy, I had no idea when you volunteered to help out and provide us an Internet home that you’d be such an integral, vital part of making the season happen. Your coordination of the web team and attention to all the technical issues make it possible for us to “flip the switch” and “go live” for each new episode.

I’ve found the Steering Committee to be a marvelous, functional team I share with two wonderful cohorts. I’ve learned a lot of incredible things from this project, and it’s been a real growth experience. I’ve both cursed and blessed it depending on the day, but ultimately have loved it dearly and am thrilled that Kandy and Barb didn’t both resign on the spot when I said “Next Season…” A special thanks to everyone who has contributed their talent to this project, to the “viewers” who have shared their comments and reactions, and finally, to David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser for shaping such remarkable characters that all these years later we simply can’t let them go after just four seasons.
